The official residence of Her Majesty the Queen, Windsor castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world with more than 500 people living and working in it. It was originally built by William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion and has been used by successive monarchs since the reign of Henry I.
The state apartments, from the early 19th century, are architecturally significant and have been described as "a superb and unrivalled sequence of rooms widely regarded as the finest and most complete expression of later Georgian taste". Fine praise indeed.
The castle occupies a large site, some five hectares (13 acres) and is comprised of a fortification, a palace and a small town. It is a Georgian and Victorian medieval structure based design with Gothic features reinvented in a modern style.
Within the 5 hectares are:
1. Magnificent state apartments
2. St George's Chapel (15th century considered to be one of the supreme achievements of English Perpendicular Gothic design)
3. Queen Mary's Dolls House, masterful miniature
4.The Drawings gallery
