Built in 1225 by Ranulf, Earl of Chester, Beeston castle was at the cutting edge of technology for fortresses. It incorporated features from fortresses in the Holy Land which the earl had observed during the crusades. So strong was it, that it was able to endure a year long seige by parliamentarian forces four centuries after it was built.
The castle now stands in ruins, such is the savagery of time, but it's commanding location can still be appreciated. From the summit of a 150m crag, at the top of the ramparts, eight counties can be seen, from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains.
