The ruins of Corfe Castle can be seen from miles around whether approaching from the north or looking down from the Purbeck Hills. Corfe Castle has had it's fair share of grandeur and bloody history:
In 978AD Edward the Martyr was murdered by his stepmother Elfreda on this site, clearing the way for her own son Ethelred the unready to sieze the English throne.
King John, the hugely unpopular king, turned Corfe Castle into one of the mightiest castles in the realm - an impregnable fortress and maximum security prison for his niece, Eleanor, and 25 of her knights (22 of who were starved to death).
Quite a walk up there, but you go through a lovely little village to get there. So atmospheric, I'd recommend it.
Will return as we go to Dorset frequently to the New Forest.
