Canterbury cathedral was founded in 602 by St Augustine although archaeological investigations under the nave floor in 1993 revealed the foundations of the original Saxon cathedral, which had been built across a former Roman road.
The cathedral boasts some of the finest medieval stained glass in the world, much of it in the the very windows where it was set. These windows, dubbed the "poor man's bible" taught thousands of illiterate pilgrims about the Old Testament, the life of Christ, the martyrdom of Becket and the miracles performed at his tomb.
