Bamburgh castle
Bamburgh castle, set on a rocky outcrop where the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria was founded in 547 by Kind Ida, is one of the most breathtaking castles in England. It's location must have imposed fear and awe on those approaching by sea.

Its defences were added to one king after another until it was almost impregnable as a fortress. However, during the War of the Roses, it became the first castle to fall to artillery bombardment - it was pounded into submission by the 1st Earl of Warwick, 'The Kingmaker', in 1464

Bamburgh castle spans nine acres of land and is one of the largest inhabited castles in England.

The great fortification of Bamburgh Castle sits on an outcrop of volcanic dolerite. It provides a natural throne upon which the castle sits forty five metres above sea level.
